Palhaço Afonso Xodó, Banda Rio e Convidados
Synopsis
On a diverse and inclusive stage, the clown Afonso Xodó takes the spotlight with the Banda Rio, a group of musicians that has been on the road for five decades, with members over 80 years old. Among the guests are clowns who represent Brazilian diversity, with gender and racial equality. Men and women, white and black, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities make up the troupe of artists in this show that brings the magic of circus, theater, and music to the audience.
Project
Ranked first in the Fomento à Cultura Carioca - FOCA grant from the Municipal Department of Culture of the City of Rio de Janeiro, in the Public Art category, the project "Palhaço Afonso Xodó, Banda Rio e Convidados" is a collaboration between Carnevale Produções and Palma Produções. It toured in four cultural venues in the periphery of Rio de Janeiro: arenas Chacrinha and Dicró, Lona da Maré, and Areninha Sandra de Sá.
We managed to gather a warm audience of over 500 people, reaffirming the importance of democratizing access to culture. At each presentation, two guest clowns joined Afonso Xodó to the rhythm of Banda Rio, a group of musicians aged between 60 and 80. "It is an honor to be with you in this project. Since 2020, I haven't received a fee for my performance," said the clown Paçoca during the photoshoot for the show. Paçoca is the artist André Guimarães, a person with a disability, and one of the guests to share the stage with the clown Afonso Xodó.
The presence of a sign language interpreter in two performances is an expression of our commitment to ensuring that culture is accessible to everyone, regardless of their hearing abilities. Our journey in producing this project not only fills us with satisfaction but also reaffirms our belief in the power of art to unite communities, create bonds, and celebrate diversity. The project also conducted the workshop "Meeting with Laughter," led by Leo Carnevale, including teachers and students from public schools in the region where the show toured.
